In the wake of last two years attacks on Somali
journalists were higher than in any other year since the
overthrow of the authoritarian Siad Barre government in
1991.
All regions of the country have experienced the worst
press freedom violations with journalists in front of
usual attacks, discriminations, harassments and
intimidation. At most these acts have sent terrorizing
messages to journalists.
“Intimidating and harming journalists has apparently
become a tool of war for armed parts in the conflict”
said Daud Abdi Daud, SOJRA executive director.
Since the Ethiopian forces have captured the country
from the union of Islamic courts in December 2006 the
situation for journalists and media professionals has
continued to deteriorate; ten (10) have been killed the
last two years 2007 and 2008 and more than 50 were
wounded others threatened with violence. the most recent
killed was Nasteh Dahir Farah, vice president of the
National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) and BBC
Somali service correspondent in Kismayo district capital
of Lower Jubba Region of Somalia who was shot dead by
unidentified gunmen on June 07 2008.
There for Nasteh is survived by his wife, Idil Abdi
Ahmed, who is six months pregnant by way of child with
the childish couples second infant. They have also have
son, who was 10 months when Nasteh Dahir was killed.
“Attacks on journalists violate their fundamental rights
to freedom of expression and press, as recognized in
international human rights lows and accord” Daud Abdi
supplemented.
Press freedom and freedom of expression is fundamental
guiding lights of a productively of peace.
