Fighting for journalists' Rights, Development, freedoms and safety

 

Training on reporting from where there is a conflict attended by journalists from nine African countries was finalised in Nairobi, Kenya

Nairobi :: June 27, 2009 The training was organized by CBA (Commonwealth Broadcasting Association) in collaboration with UNESCO and Commonwealth Foundation and hosted by Nation TV of Kenya which is a local partner with CBA.

The journalists attended the training was from the following countries;

1-     Kenya.

2-     Mozambique

3-     Uganda

4-     Somalia

5-     Malawi

6-     Sudan

7-     Tanzania

8-     Rwanda

9-     Switzerland

During the training period there have been speech guest by A-24 Media, Slum TV and Article 19, while each of them was questioned by the journalists regarding their speech and their work.

Joseph Munga from A-24 Media who is also the editor of A-24 Media has provided pictures indicating that inhumanity (Human Crises ) and freedom of the media he also was questioned how they found the pictures and if there was a danger of them during the time they was taking the pictures.

At once are the African journalists have deeply worried after a female journalist from Slum TV in Kenya has provided Audio video being taken during the Kenya election chaos.

 The tension of the journalists was again changed while Julius Mwelu of Slum TV has reported about how they work, Type of the equipments they use which is not properly enough upon their work, while they use one camera, one laptop and one microphone which are the only equipments that they use.

The journalists was questioned her about that and she indicated that it is due to lack of enough economic they cannot pay latest equipments and more then these mentioned above which is appropriate the work of TV.

From day to day the interest of the mediation between the journalists and the way the workshop is going was interesting, while the freedom of expression and press foredoom was also spoken on the mediation and regarding this Roxanna Abdullali of article 19 head of African programs.

She spoke strongly regarding the freedom of the press and free thought as well as freedom of speech. She also indicated the worst of the journalism of Somalia and the increasing number of the assassinations against the Somali journalists.

The director of SOJRA Daud Abdi Daud representing for Somalia, whom also attended the workshop was provided the pictures of the five Somali journalists died this year and one journalist whom was stabbed five times during his working time.

The tension of the African journalists was showed how they are very sorry the killing and damaging of the Somali journalists while they kept the pictures of died Somali journalists and the injured one on their head and their chests.

The director of SOJRA was spoke there regarding how the situation of Somalia is a serious and make possibility of prohibiting the journalism is increasing while those tries to report from there are going to force to keep silent.He was questioned by the journalists after his speech .

Finally the journalists was handed over the workshop graduation certificate, they was also thanked the organizers and also agreed to keep on touch and create a system that they can work together.
