SOJRA calls the local Somali Journalists to benefit this opportunity

Subject: journalism, Somalia

"Dear SOJRA,

I would like first to to introduce myself.

My name is Nikola and I am one of the editors of a photojournalist news agency from London called Demotix. We are based on the principle of citizen journalism. It is a user generated content website that has at the moment more than 13.000 contributors in more than 130 countries worldwide. You can see our work at www.demotix.com

The idea behind it is to democratize the way news is reported. Through Demotix, everyone has a chance to tell their local stories, which are often overlooked by the mainstream media, because they are deemed not important enough. Demotix is seeking to change that.

How it works is is our contributors upload photo stories, and then we take the stories with the highest quality and we market them to our media clients (among which are the Wall Street Journal, New York Post, Guardian, BBC, Reuters, AP, Telegraph, to name but a few)

I am contacting you to ask you for help/advice. Do you know some photographers based in Somalia. I have been struggling for months to find some photographers there but without success.

I would like to find photographers to invite them to join our community. This could be a good way for them to get international exposure for their work and tell the local stories with a camera, from their perspective, and not just what the western media portrays Somalia to be.

Can you please help me with this? If you have any contacts of people you think would be appropriate can you please please tell them to email me at nico@demotix.com

Thank you in advance and looking forward to your reply.

Kind regards,
