HUMAN RIGHTS ADVOCACY
Somali Journalists Rights
Agency (SOJRA) sees justice and human rights as prerequisite for
peace and development.
Since the fall of Barre regime
in 1991, there was wide-spread human rights violations in the
country. Many civilians were killed in cold blood, others looted,
and some women were raped. There was confiscation of land in
Southern Somalia.
In short, an environment was
born in which the powerful clans violate the rights of minorities.
A minority to leave peacefully he has to hire the protection of a
powerful clan member.
The human rights were not only
violated socially, but also politically. The power-sharing
formula, 4.5, which was born in Djibouti in 2000, has deprived
some clans of their rights to political participation. Without
official census, a small share has been allocated for these clans,
commonly known in Somalia as 'Others'.
SOJRA records the
human rights violations in South and Central Somalia. Besides the
records, SOJRA advocates for the protection of and respect of human
rights.
SOJRA encourages
all stakeholders to apply the agreed-upon principles and universal
human rights declarations. We also urge the application of
international humanitarian law and freedom of speech. |
