Working to Protect Journalist Rights and Welfare in across the country

Two Somali Journalist were arrested today by Al-shabab in Kismaio, while others escaped.

Mogadishu 25 December, 2009 :: Somali Journalist Rights Agency (SOJRA) is condemning the arrest of the Somali Journalist by Alshabab in Kismaio and is demanding their immediately release.

This action is uncultured and against the freedom of speech and media and Alshabab has to not violate the human rights of the Somali journalists.

The arrest of the Somali journalist came following their reports of the fighting between Xisbul-Islam and Alshabab along the Kenya - Somali border which Alshabab were not happy.

Last week Al-shabab issued a statement that was restricting the Somali reporters under their territory to report directly to their media houses and demanding permission from Ashabab. Journalists ignored that statement today and reported to their media houses, hence, they were ordered their arrest.

Last year, more than two-dozen of Alshabab armed men raided and forcibly entered midnight the house of the humanirerian worker in Kismaio and arrested, detained and tortured him badly.

The arrested Somali Humanitarian workers, Mr Abdiasis Mohamed Diriye who has been working for Himilo (a Somali Non governmental Organization) in Kismayo was arrested and tortured badly by Alshabab. This humanitarian worker is still under treatment in Galkayo Hospital as out patient following head injury by the Alshabab in Kismaio.

This week, Punt-land Intelligence Service, raided and forcibly entered a house of VOA reporter in Galkacyo and arrested him.

In Beletweyne Ali Farah, the security officer of WFP was killed on 22nd December 2009 by armed men believed to be Alshabab members.

The year 2010 will be a year that many Somali journalist in Somalia have to die and other have to run away as the security of the country will be expected to deteriorate.

TFG, Punt-land and Insurgents will the year 2010 target the Somalia journalist, just not to cover the untold human right violation story they will commit in Somalia.

SOJRA is requesting government of Kenya to give access the escapee Somali journalist from the Alshabab of Kismayo, as some journalist are on their way to Kenya.

Sojra will work the protection of Somali Journalist and humanitarian workers in Somalia.

More about this, plus comments and analysis will be published our website: www.sojra.org.
